A SHORT TAKE ON MILITARY SERVICE

SENATOR McCAIN WAS A FIGHTER PILOT WHO MANAGED TO GET SHOT DOWN 4 TIMES BEFORE BEING TAKEN PRISONER

mccain_fighterpilot.jpgNow, I admit that I wasn’t much of a hero during my Army service.

I spent my two years at Fort Gordon outside of Augusta, Georgia as the Jewish Chaplain’s Assistant, It was during the Vietnam War, and I simply lucked out.

Our post had a hospital where injured troops were sent to heal, and during my service, I got to meet a lot of heroes in that hospital.

And so to Senator John McCain, I can honestly say; Sir, I have met heroes, and you are no hero. You were a wise ass middie at Annapolis who finished 5th from the bottom of your class. Then you were a fighter pilot who managed to get shot down 4 times before being taken prisoner.

Frankly, based on your military prowess, I would much rather have someone who never served in the military as Commander in Chief than someone who spent the bulk of his war in a POW camp. At least I know that person hadn’t screwed up and gotten captured. Yeah, I know you were tortured, and I know that you stayed when you could have been repatriated because your father was an Admiral, But, gimme a break, Senator. There are a great many former POWs who were imprisoned with you who don’t glorify your name every time you appear on television. However, we here at The Lib, don’t want to stoop to the level of the Republicans and start a Swift Boat type campaign.

And it seems that a true American hero, former Secretary of State and Army Chief of Staff, General Colin Powell, a Republican and former member of the George W. Bush cabinet, must feel the same way because he has endorsed Senator Obama, a non military lawyer rather than Senator McCain, a combat veteran.

Of course, the Republicans’ hate machine, led by Sarah Palin and Rush Limbaugh, are trying to make us believe that the Powell endorsement is based solely on race, but we know better, Colin Powell, like Senator Obama an African American, is simply too smart to make such an important decision based on the color of a candidate’s skin. Oh, I know that he messed up when he stood behind ‘W’ in 2000 and 2004, but he has learned the error of his ways.

Colin Powell is a hero and a diplomat, and he’s smart enough to learn from the lessons of history.

We should be too.
